What is MCP middleware?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) connects AI applications to tools and data. On its own it moves requests between a client and a server. MCP middleware wraps that pipeline to add the capabilities every production system needs — security, observability and reliability — as reusable layers rather than bespoke code in each server.

You'll find middleware inside MCP gateways, embedded in servers, or as a proxy in between. It's the functional glue that turns a working protocol into a production-grade one.
